The Right Way to Add Texture
Velvet:
Velvet is hot right now, finding ways to sneak it into a room regardless if it is the bedroom or living room is easy as long as it’s done properly. Keep velvet to a minimum, have a velvet sofa or chairs but don’t do both. Pillows are a nice way to add them into any room as well, and they are easily removable if they get dirty.
Faux Fur:
Faux fur adds a major amount of glamour to any space. Adding in a faux fur rug to the living room under the coffee table or drape a fur blanket over the couch or the foot of the bed adds a nice soft space for the eyes to catch without being to harsh.
Metals:
Sprinkling in metals is a great way to add some edge to the space. This texture you can go a little wild with. Lamps, coffee tables, fixtures, you cant really over do it as long as there are other soft items in the room. Metal finishes on furniture pieces are really popular, the nice simple detail of having gold furniture nails embellish the arms of a leather sofa upgrades the living space without being over the top. Cast Iron has also made a big appearance over the past couple of years. Wall mounts and end tables built with cast iron add an industrial edge. Painting an accent wall with a metal textured paint can be nice way to add a little attitude to the room while not over doing it.
Knits:
Another addition to soften any space is a knit accent. A knit pillow or throw blanket hanging off the chair gives the room a welcoming attitude like “hey come relax on me”. Now there are also end stools, and small bean bag style chairs that you can add to a room that are knit that will create a cozy atmosphere and easily removable so you can take them from one room to another.
Wood Grains:
Barn wood walls have really increased in popularity over the past couple of years. Natural grain wood tends to add more intrigue than a clean slab of wood. The knots tell a story and break up the piece to give it more character. In order to add wood to the space, you don’t have to go for the whole wall but adding in with smaller pieces. Small touches such as picture frames, serving trays on the coffee table, or larger pieces like wood chairs or headboards are aesthetically pleasing.
Plants:
Plants are a huge contribution to making a space look welcoming. The greenery also adds a nice touch of color regardless of your decor. Plants help purify the air, and the different leaf shapes add an interesting element to the room. Mix it up with a large plant and a couple small ones all with different textures.
